Who's in Charge?
Pete // 'The Big Kahuna'
Pete Hughes is the team leader for Soma. He is married to Audrey and they have three kids, Calvin and Kia and Evangeline. Pete spent 10 years in itinerant preaching, parish ministry and AFES. He has produced a DVD on church history and has a Bachelor and Masters degree from Moore Theological College. He was ordained into the Anglican Church in 2001.
The launch of Soma has come from many years of prayer, thinking and researching the doctrine of church and how church can be done differently in this culture, to reach people living in this culture, without taking away the unique message of Jesus. If you are not sure who else to ask, he is probably the one you should talk to.
For the first stages Soma is a part of St John's North Ryde - Pete is answerable to the senior minister and parish council there.
Pete didn't have any say in his job title... that's probably a good thing. He would probably have misspelt it.
Alison // 'The Queen of Welcome'
You'll probably find Alison Stretton saying "hello!" to you at the door; she heads up our welcoming minstry. During the week, she works as a speech pathologist with deaf children. At other times, you'll find her mucking around with a scocer ball, watching NCIS, and catching up with friends. She writes, "I believe people are important--they matter heaps to God, and they matter to me too. I hope I can help you find your place in the Soma Community."
Being in charge of welcoming, you may get a cheery email from her. She really is lovely and welcoming, although her royalty may be questionable.
Joe // 'The Music Geek'
Here at Soma we're passionate about music and how it fits into the context of Christian life, and Joe is one of the people helping to define what that looks like in our church meetings and elsewhere. Joe's been fascinated by music since birth, and along the way has enjoyed playing it, listening to it, talking about it, producing it and - most importantly - seeing God use it in all varieties of incredible ways.
Soma Music has a blog where the team shares their experiences and thoughts. Joe also has a blog where he writes about music he's enjoying.
Audrey // Soma Kids
Raising three kids (aged 6 years and 6 months), Audrey would say that she understands kids! Having taught her own kids and many other kids about Jesus, she understands the importance of meeting kids where they're at, teaching kids at their stage of development and maturity, always with fun and friendship.
Jesus is the BEST news that anyone could hear and here at Soma Kids, our aim is that our kids will walk away every week excited, knowing how a very big God loves very little people like them, and that they can love and trust in Him for everything in their lives. Jesus is the BEST friend they could ever have.
Join us for the fun in learning about the Son!
