Why do I need church? I'm already a good person.

Christians do good things

Lots of Christians all over the world have made community service and the doing of good and moral things a priority over history.

This may have given you the impression that this was the point of church and the end goal of Christian acitivity. Following on from this, you could surmise that if you are a good person who does good things then you don't need a church, since these things can be done perfectly well without the whole institution thing.

However, the actual point of church isn't about serving in the community or doing good things--though a church might do this. The point of church isn't just to encourage people to be nicer, or better, or live up to some benchmark in the sky.

good things don't make a relationship

"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone."

Christianity is primarily about your eternal relationship with the God of this Universe, your creator and the King he has placed over us. Secondarily is it about your relationship with all the other believers in Jesus' kingdom!

If you don't need a relationship with God, then you don't need Jesus and you don't need church. Think carefully before you make that decision! We have a good presentation about what it takes to have a real relationship with God here!

We here at Soma don't want you to mistakenly think that doing good things is the point of Soma.... though we really hope to be doing heaps of good works!

For we are His creation—created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them. Eph 2:10
